The project is carried out as a collaboration between the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the Sapienza University of Rome, and the University of Bucharest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team, represented by Dr. Emmanouil Zoulias (Laboratory Teaching Staff at the Health Informatics Laboratory) and PhD candidate Marianna Isaakidou, presented the deliverable entitled: \u201cCombating Health Misinformation: A Systematic Literature Review on Key Trends, Gaps, and Challenges in the study of Misinformation\u201d which is a systematic literature review in the field of health misinformation. The results were presented in a research paper entitled \u201cSick and Seeking: Vulnerability in the Age of Misinformation\u201d, which investigates how vulnerable or not certain individuals are to health misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the workshop, participants learned that health misinformation has severe social and economic consequences, sometimes even impacting the ability of health professionals to deliver care. Furthermore, it was highlighted that such misinformation thrives on social media, exploiting human fears and emotions. To this end, the workshop provided a clear framework for identifying and distinguishing between different types of false information: a) \u201cMisinformation\u201d (misinformation without malicious intent), b) \u201cDisinformation\u201d (misinformation with malicious intent to people who usually believe false information) and c) \u201cMalinformation\u201d (deliberate misinformation with deceit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particular emphasis was placed on the impact of misinformation on <strong>mental health<\/strong>, citing the prominent example of &#8220;fake news&#8221; regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines. Students actively contributed to the discussion, pointing out that modern technology facilitates the mass production of such content using inexpensive tools without requiring any specialized knowledge on the creator\u2019s side. It was further noted that the groups most affected are usually the most vulnerable, such as people over 60 years old and age groups between 20\u201340 years old, especially when they have a low educational level and insufficient digital and technological literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, participants stressed the urgent need for public education to combat distorted information. They pointed out that education plays a crucial role in combating misinformation by equipping individuals with the skills to evaluate information.
